where TV shows go to die

I know that I've been posting quite a bit about television - but it's that time of year: may is officially season finale + TV network upfronts time (that's when they release the schedules for next fall and we find out what got cancelled).

Today, I found out that one of my favourite new shows (actually, the only midseason pilot I chose to check out) is cancelled.

I can't say I was surprised...after all, every single one of my favourite television shows of recent years have died and gone to TV heaven (apparently, TV heaven is the world of comics/graphic novels). The cancellation of "The Unusuals", a police procedural with a quirky sense of humour (not even bothering to explain more - it only has four more episodes left...EVER) gave me a chance to think about all those great dead shows I love(d) - Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, and more recently, Veronica Mars and Pushing Daisies.

Of all the cancellations, the Pushing Daisies one still hurts the most. Not because it was the most recent, but because that was the first time I ever felt a very real sense of ABSOLUTE BLISS watching something. No film, TV show, or piece of music has ever made me feel that kind of happiness (the only comparable piece of pop culture would be reading jostein gaarder's "the solitaire mystery" for the first time). I love whimsy and I love quirk - and the show was the best possible combination of that (with a dash of mystery solving goodness).

But yeah - so apparently, all the shows I love end up in the trash. Or maybe it's just that good television just never manages to find an audience these days - and sadly it's shows like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and CSI (and its many reincarnations) that dominate the ratings. SNORE.

I guess I'll just have to resort to DVDs - yep, that's pretty much the plan when Lost has its last season next year.
