political crisis, averted?
I've been having a hard time determining my feelings about the coalition shenanigans this past week...and at the heart of it, I can't say that I agreed with either side. Lack of opinion aside, I do have some thoughts.
Speaking as a former Quebecoise, I was personally offended by the sheer demonization of the Bloc-Quebecois, and also of Quebecers in general. To name-call everyone separatists is not only a generalization, but only serves to corrode French-English relations in Canada. It might be fine and dandy to accuse the Bloc-Quebecois of being separatist in English Canada, but in Quebec, they are viewed as a valid political entity (and not just the butt of jokes).
What I am most displeased with is using the Quebec-BQ-separatism fears as a scapegoat for the lack of real governance by the Conservatives. I'm not saying that I support the coalition's efforts (it was certainly poor timing and lack of thorough planning..and the PR was just bad), but the truth of the matter is, flaherty's address re: current financial crisis simply had no direction. how the heck is our country going to face these tough economic times? we certainly haven't had any concrete answers from our current government.
more drama to come this week, i'm sure!
