the little things

I wanted to start a column on this blog about the small things that make me happy. The everyday joys, I suppose. I wanted to be able to share these seemingly innocuous moments in time where everything is a-ok.

It seems appropriate to start this column off with a few thoughts on a good cup of joe. It has the power to make my day go ok, even though I feel like complete crap. I had one of those days last week…right up until I found out that a new Wicked Café opened in the heart of downtown. I’ve been lamenting the lack of good coffee around the downtown core for some time…and finally! Finally! A clover machine was within walking distance.
After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll down Robson, towards Hornby…and happily browsed the selection of Intelligentsia beans at the front of the store. I picked up a bag of direct trade beans from Flor Azul, Nicaragua and ever so subtly skipped over to the counter to pay (don’t worry, let me assure you that it was SUBTLE). I ordered a cup of what they were brewing on the Clover…and I admired the neatly imprinted walls (imprinted with the cool Intelligentsia wings logo) as I waited for my coffee.

The nice barista took his time (not in that inefficient way, but in the “making sure I’m handing the customer a good product” way) and as he handed over the cup to me, I felt a rush of what could only be described as bliss. I took a moment to breathe in the aroma before taking a sip. The coffee: Clean, floral, balanced. Me: Happy, and at peace.
