rest in peace

I still remember when Columbine happened
how north america froze right in its tracks
in sheer horror
of the violence, the intent, the loss

I remember thinking
these are kids just like me
who go to school just like me
who think about how to spend the day after the last bell rings
just like me

perhaps it is hard for us to contemplate
the barrel of a gun
when it is not staring in our face

but on a day like this
how can you or I not spend a moment
to consider
how we've become so enculturated in violence?

on a day like today
how can you or I not grow angry
at the lax laws that govern the use of firearms?

to the many who are suffering today
I pray that the skies of mercy will bless you with the healing
to endure
may the love of God enfold you.
