absolute disgust
an interesting piece of info regarding yesterday's post: it was my 124th post...SCARY.
my daily transit routine consists of either reading or listening to the "democracy now" podcast, which helps pass the time in a relatively productive way. (i've also tried journalling and doing devo's on the bus...but...it doesn't quite work out as well)
I always like to share some of the news that I hear about from the show...but have shyed away from it in the past due to the intellectual demand of writing about it (as opposed to say, 24). I will TRY to do more informational pieces in the future, starting with today:
A top-ranking Pentagon official in the U.S recently made comments on a federal news program regarding the legal representation of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay:
"I think, quite honestly, when corporate CEOs see that those firms are representing the very terrorists who hit their bottom line back in 2001, those CEOs are going to make those law firms choose between representing terrorists or representing reputable firms, and I think that is going to have major play in the next few weeks. And we want to watch that play out."
- Charles Stimson (Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs)
Soon after these remarks, the American Bar Association retaliated and described Stimson's comments to be offensive to the legal profession and all Americans.
I was incredibly disgusted by the comments made. The kind of disgust that made me burn with anger from the inside-out. People still refer to the American Dream being the pinnacle of justice and freedom, but in all honesty, examples are few and far between to support this account. The very idea of locking up so-called "enemy combattants" and stripping them of their legal right to representation is irreprehensible and outrageous. To outright speak against the very law firms who are trying to provide civil rights to the prisoners at Guantanamo is not only tactless, but serves to defeat the very foundation of the Constitution.
*Sigh*...
