geek-speak
definition: when extensive vocabulary is used to describe concepts, issues, and opinions in relation to a subject you are knowledgeable about. For the most part, this occurs within the realm of what you study; and is particularly prevalent when you are surrounded by people of the same field/interests.
I was thinking the other day how it might be such a big turn-off to listen to someone just go on and on in language that is so saturated in academia that only the geekiest of geeks can understand. as human beings, I think that we find great joy in consubstantiality (establishing similarities with a fellow human being)...but often times, geek-speak can really be exclusionary. I realize how big of a hypocrite I am in saying this - I myself am very guilty of the geek-speak syndrome. I mean...who frequently uses "dichotomization" on a daily basis anyway? And "commodity fetishism", "conspicuous consumption"...expecting to be understood?
Aye. I will take this opportunity to apologize about my overexcitement in regards to academia...feel free to boink me in the head with a large book.
