reflections on "the cure for pain"
While listening to Jon Foreman’s new EP, “Fall”, and at the same time telling my friend how much I love it, I realized that this deep connection that I have with the music that Jon writes is something that’s my own. Although I have friends who really like the band, I’m the only one who is consistently listening to them and would sing along to EVERY SINGLE SONG at a concert. It’s weird how their music has become an anchor for me; a place of solace in times of joy and in times of pain. There’s really no other band/artist that I feel this way about (as much as I can sing along to every Tina Dico song as well), and there’s this friendship with their music that I can’t deny. I remember an old interview that tim foreman did, where he said that he was always astonished at how something as personal as a song can be so universal. I think music has that way with people…even though it comes from such a private place, it has the ability to connect souls.
The song that I’ve included below is my favourite of the EP at the moment. I suppose it’s the first one that I connected with…and really, posting the lyrics doesn’t do it justice…there’s something about jon’s falsetto of the “And heaven knows, heaven knows” that will surely give you goosebumps.
We are people so desperate for love, for fulfillment, yet we let our earthly ambitions grow like fire in our veins…so when we try and retain all those good things that God has been given, of grave and love, we can’t contain them anymore. We are always on the run for something that will make us whole, to make us free from pain, but we do not realize that we are called to bear the individual cross that God has chosen for us…
