chinese urban legends
there's a lot of "knowledge" ingrained in me that comes from no real reliable source other than it's been passed on from one generation to another....here are some of those silly "facts" my mom still touts:
1) don't eat pork and fish at the same time...something about indigestion?
2) farting means that you're growing well! (or a sign of digestion)
3) don't eat oranges when you're sick
4) don't drink or eat cold stuff when it's the "time of the month"
5) don't jump around/do physical activity right after you eat (this one does actually make sense)
I can't think of more at the moment...I'd love to hear what "facts" run in your family too :)

4 Comments:
1. Eating "dong goo" keeps your hair really, really black.
2. Jump rope makes you grow taller.
3. Cover your tummy or else you'll "lung chun." (I think my mom told me this during the crop top fad.)
-Kanker sores result from eating "yeet hay" food such as fries, chips, and too many "sup yeet" fruits such as durian, mangos, lychees.
-"Sup yeet" food (see above) and "cool" food (such as watermelon) are not to be consumed when your "Aunt" visits you.
-If your left eye twitches, it means good luck is coming your way. If your right eye twitches, bad luck is coming your way.
-If you keep rubbing your stomach after a meal, it'll grow bigger!
-Spinach and tofu cannot be consumed at the same time. They produced a toxin that is bad for your digestive system.
-If you are sick, the best way to give yourself energy is drinking "Bat Lan See" chicken extract. (nasty!)
-If you live in a house of house number #4, #14, #44 (catch my drift?), or your house sits right on end of a T intersection, bad luck will come your way.
I don't know what "urban legends" run in my family, except for the standard put your coat on or you'll catch a cold. The hubby's family has more... but I have to say I believe NONE of the ones posted here nor those of my inlaws. I drink cold stuff at all times of year, including winter. I also eat oranges when I am sick. I've also done physical activity right after eating although I would not recommend a roller coaster after eating. :)
My favourite is that a person's health improves dramatically with the amount of soup that person drinks. Ugh! I am okay with soup but not if I am forced to have it!
i always thought of these as old wives' tales. anything to do with health are a result of the idea of the yin and yang balancing. in terms of food, oranges, crabs, go in the categories of "cold natured", therefore, over-consumption or having them when you are sick is not good for you. you want things that are "warm natured" when you are feeling unwell. this is but a small part of a bigger wisdom.
