the snooze button
"I set my alarm clock half an hour early just so I can snooze."
A friend of mine said this the other night, as we sat chatting about sleeping habits. it seemed like a perfectly normal thing for me to hear - I get it, you want the illusion of getting just a bit more sleep and delaying the "reality" of waking up. I get it because I do it too - I will do my best to remain in the fantasy of sleep. Mmmm....sleeeeeep. *picture Homer Simpson drooling*
I got to thinking this morning though, as I lifted myself out of my bed, that people enjoy pressing the "snooze button" on life as well. waking up means dealing with our frustrations, weaknesses, and more importantly, the reality and brokenness of the world around us. there is so much to lose when you wake up - you may be disappointed, overwhelmed, and realize that there are comforts that you need to sacrifice. and so we press the snooze button again and again, hoping that the illusion of suburbia and "the good life" could just stay a little longer. we even set ourselves up for pressing the button again and again, and create circles of comfort around us to maintain the dream a bit longer.
what does it take for us to want to wake up?

For me, it's knowing that another life depends on my waking up.
